Location This shot was taken in my studio in Rijswijk, The Netherlands. It's basically an unused office floor with all the charm thereof. Time As the studio cannot be darkened, I met with Leo after sunset. Lighting The model danced between two permanent lights (strong LEDs with a standard reflector plus honeycomb) during a long exposure. Two studio flashes (also with honeycomb) were fired on the second curtain. Make sure no light spills on your background. Equipment Two 150W permanent LEDs with standard reflector and honeycomb, two studio flashes with tele-reflector and honeycomb. The camera (Nikon D800) was on a low tripod, almost on the ground. The camera was in bulb-mode and triggered with a remote release. The flashes were fired on the second curtain by radiotrigger. I used 85mm and / or 70-200 lenses. The background was a combination of black paper and black cloth. Inspiration I love the visualisation of a movement, it's almost like a movie in a photo. Editing Some global and local adaptation of exposure, blacks, contrast. This studio has a low white ceiling, I had to darken that. In my camera bag For the studio I usually carry a Nikon D800 with a 85 mm lens. Further, radiotriggers, remote release, batteries, model releases. Feedback Make really sure no light spills on your background. Be patient, the timing and movement is more difficult for the model than it might seem. Thierry Schmitter is a kitesurfer who's not stopped by sitting in a wheelchair, his skills are impressive! He straps himself to a seat mounted to his kiteboard ("sit-kite"). We attached a flash to the lines for an evening session on the water in the "Zandmotor", The Hague, the Netherlands. It was fun, we only stopped when it was too dark to focus the camera. 20181002 492.JPG

I met with the model (Zu Ivanova, model mayhem # 4269747) in my studio, which is basically an empty office floor with all its charm and lack thereof. For this shoot, it was a great place. For this part of the shoot, it had to be dark. As my studio cannot be properly darkened, we met on an evening in October and started shooting after sunset. Two strong permanent LED lights with standard reflectors and honeycombs were placed camera-left and camera-right respectively. The model moved between these lights during a long exposure. One, sometimes two flashes were fired on the second curtain, i.e. at the end of the exposure. The flashes also had honeycombs in order to avoid light-spills. The background was made of two black paper rolls and a black curtain, giving us about eight meters of black background. Equipment As equipment I relied on two studio flashes with short flash duration (Godox QT600) with tele-reflectors and honeycombs and two 150W LED lights with standard reflectors and honeycombs. Further a Nikon D800 with a Nikon 85mm lens on a sturdy tripod, radiotrigger for the flashes and a remote shutter release. Black cloth and paper for the background. This setup shows so much more than a standard photograph: The "before" is recorded as well, giving a mystic feeling of time and movement. In other, somewhat more sober words: it's a movie in a photo... Editing I darkened the ceiling and the floor in post. Otherwise, it was some correction of exposure, clarity and contrast. If you'd like to try it, make sure there's absolutely no light on your background (e.g. by using honeycombs and enough distance between the background and the model). With the gritted lights, the model has to stay exactly on the line between the two LED lights, otherwise she's in the dark. It's not easy for the model, be patient. This shoot is part of a series where I play with light and shadow. I met with model @roberta_ms5 in the studio to play with light and shadow. Here we had one flash behind the model, close to a white background, creating the soft white spot on the background. A second flash (a compact flash) was used in combination with a light blaster and a metal gobo, placed to the right of the camera, i.e. the model is looking right at it in this photo. The light-blaster in this case creates nothing but a single fine line of light. As no further light source was used, she remains black where the light of the light blaster does not reach her, making her black silhouette visible in front of the lit background. 20190310 263.JPG

This photo was taken at the beach in The Hague, The Netherland ona cold evening with a light breeze. We went to the beach just before sunset and prepared everything. Once the sun was gone, we started shooting. I like to have just a bit of the sky in the background, but since the control of the fire's brightness is limited, it is difficult to balance the light and we had to get it done while there was just the right amount of sunlight left Apart from the last bit of sunlight in the background, the only light source is the fire. I used an oil-soaked Kevlar rope, attached to two aluminium rods. The long exposure was triggered remotely (bulb), during which the model has to stand absolutely still, which is not an easy task. This shot was taken with a Nikon D800 with a Tamron 24-70 on a tripod, attached to a radio trigger. The fire was the only light source (apart from what's left of the sunset). For this shoot I also needed oil, a Kevlar rope, aluminium rods, lighter, gloves, black clothing, etc. I like to capture the unreal, the unexpected. The long exposure results in an image that the eye cannot see as such. Creating shapes and figures with fire is a fantastic art. Further inspiration came from Barry Elder (Van Elder Photography) and Benjamin von Wong. I usually shoot RAW to allow for corrections. In some photos, I had to remove ghost images of myself. I finetuned clarity, shadows and overall exposure Equipment I shoot in the studio, on the beach and in a pool, what I pack depends therefore a lot on the kind of shoot. My preferred camera is a Nikon D800 in a hard case with three lenses (85, 24-70, 70-200 mm), triggers, batteries, blank model releases, cables. I often work with flashes (Godox QT600 and TT600, Jinbei HD600, Yongnuo 560III). I also needed oil, a Kevlar rope, aluminium rods, lighter, gloves, etc. Feedback To begin with, play it safe! Make sure there's nothing flammable around. If you shoot with a model, make sure the clothing is not flammable and be careful with long hair too. Have water and / or an extinguisher around. A wet towel helps too. Find a model that can hold still (you'd be surprised how difficult that can be). It'll be easier for the model if she/he can sit. Get a good and reliable radio trigger for bulb exposure. The person holding the fire should be wearing black, including a black face mask and black gloves. Use a tripod. Good starting settings for this shoot are RAW, ISO 100, f/13, bulb, but it all depends on the brightness of the fire, the exposure duration and the ambient light. The focus must be fixed, I like the "back-button" option. Ask your model to hold a light, focus and fix the focus. Your model should then stay on the same spot, it may be a good idea to put a marker down. It's also a good idea to repeat the focusing every now and then. From here on it is (safe) playing and experimenting. Change the pose, change the exposure duration (shorter makes life easier), change the position and movement of the fire. Illumination A water-filled balloon was dropped on the model in the dark, gelled flashes were fired by a sound trigger the moment the balloon burst. Surprisingly, the flash with the yellow gel malfunctioned and fired at full power, resulting not only in an overexposure which could be corrected, but also in a longer flash duration. The individual drops moving away from the balloon are therefore shown as thin yellow stripes, an effect I quite liked. 20160904 081b

Dressed in elements - smoke steam from dry ice in hot water. The steam is poured over the model, covering only part of the body, which requires the model to maintain the same pose over some time. Numerous photographs were combined to create the dress. As the steam is heavier than air, the model has to be reclined, otherwise the steam would not follow the body, the picture was rotated later. A waterballoon was popped by a knife hidden in the fist. Outdoor shoot at noon in bright sunlight, the ambient light was excluded by supersyncing flashes.
